Joint £1 million UK/Mexico healthcare textiles project

healthcare fabrics

NW Texnet is directing a research project to develop antimicrobial textile coatings for use in the healthcare sector.

UK and Mexican companies are collaborating on R&D of worldwide importance owing to the significant economic and social impact of hospital acquired infections, which extend hospital stays, raise healthcare costs, and cause many thousands of preventable deaths annually.

The project has developed new treatments for textiles based on copper and functionalised silica, incorporated via inkjet printing and an ultrasound-assisted melt-mixing process for non-wovens. The use of cost-effective treated textiles will help solve the growing problem of infections acquired not only in hospitals but also in the wider care environment.
